An overview of the relationship between Sufis and rulers during the Tughlaq period

Abstract

The local and cultural Islamic groups were the primary sources who expanded the Sufism teachings and knowledge in the Sub-continent. Sufis not only helped to preach the religion but they also enlightened their followers about the spiritual knowledge and educated them. Sufis were very tolerant and receptive towards the non-Muslims and their cultural and social practices. The hermitages were very wide spread found in abundance during the Tughluq reign. The Tughuq rulers were quiet prominent in the sub-continent during (1320 – 1414) and they ruled over the sub-continent for ninety four years. Ghiaas ud Din Tughluq, Muhammad Bin Tughluq and Feroze Shah Tughluq were among the most prominent rulers of the Tughluq Dynasty. The following article focuses on the relation between the Tughluq rulers and the Sufis.
