Abstract

This article deasls with the historical development of the genre novel in the modern Arabic literature. Th art of novel writing in the Arabic literature emerged as a result of Napoleon's attack on Egypt in 1798 that combined education of the two civilazation i.e. Western and Eastern. Eminent writers of the modern age also promote this art. In this context important writers are Taha Hussain, Najeeb Mahfooz, Toufeeq Al Hakeem, Muhammad Husnain Haqal, Jourjee Zaidan, Mahmood Taimoor, Almaznee, Taouffeq Awad, Yousaf Alsabaee etc. This article takes into account denotative and connotative meanings of the genre novel. Various kinds and characteristics of novel writing are also analyzed. Moreover, The social conditions during the process of development have also been discussed.
